French Open

French Open second round on Sunday with a gruelling 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 win over Italy's Sara Errani as Roland Garros temperatures hit a sweltering 30 degrees. The 21-year-old, eighth-seeded Serbian will play either Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn or Camille Pin of France for a place in the third round. Ivanovic eased through the tiebreak and then dominated the second set, stretching out a 5-1 lead on the back of two breaks.
The cheerful Ivanovic, who skipped the Madrid Open because of a knee injury, had the problem area taped when she walked onto a sun-drenched Philippe Chatrier Court, but it didn't hinder her in the early exchanges as she edged to a 3-1 advantage. The 44th-ranked Italian then stormed back to lead 5-4, but once she had squandered an opportunity to serve for the first set in the 10th game, her fight steadily melted away. She suffered a slight blip when Errani clawed one break back in the eighth game, but the champion eventually clinched victory with a swooping forehand in the ninth game after over two hours on court.
"I knew I had to work hard for every point, but I kept my composure even when I was making mistakes," said Ivanovic, who racked up 50 winners in the match. "My knee wasn't a problem. I feel fine. I had some good practice sessions last week after taking the Madrid tournament off. It only takes a few days to get back into shape." China's Li Na, the 25th seed, earlier had the honour of becoming the first player to reach the second round thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Poland's Marta Domachowska.

Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Machida's first UFC light-heavyweight title defense will be against former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. No target date but UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Jackson will receive the first shot at Machida's belt. If the rumors are true that Jackson and Machida will serve as coaches on "The Ultimate Fighter 10," the two will meet in December. Jackson originally earned the title shot with his UFC 92 win over Wanderlei Silva last December. However, injuries prevented Jackson from facing Rashad Evans at UFC 98, leaving Machida to step in to fulfill his title aspirations.
Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida, a karate specialist, used his kicks to gain the advantage and then landed a series a punches that knocked Rashad Evans down three times in the second round to win the UFC light heavyweight championship at UFC 98 in Las Vegas. The final blow was a devastating left hook that flattened Evans. His 205-pound body collapsed faster than the last few grains of a sand in a timer.
I tried all my life to be a champion, and I'm very, very happy," Machida said. "And now, I'm going to keep this belt for a long time. And to everyone, if you have a dream in your life, go ahead, it's possible. Machida's unorthodox style kept Evans (18-1-1) at bay the entire fight. Machida (15-0) landed big left kicks in the first and second rounds, helping to keep Evans at bay. Machida connected on a left leg kick to the body, followed by a left hand that dropped Evans to the ground toward the end of the first round. Machida pounced on Evans and landed a few shots before the champion got back to his feet.
