The USS New York began its journey today to New York City for a commissioning ceremony scheduled for November 7, 2009. The USS New York departed from Avondale, Louisiana at 7 a.m. and traveled down the Mississippi River through downtown News Orleans. Spectators lined the levees waving flags that were handed out by representatives from Northrop Grumman Company, the company who built the ship. The 800-passenger ship was built in Avondale Louisiana and used eight tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center Towers after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Hi, my name is Cecilia and I'm a proud crew member on board the USS New York. I was born and raised right across the river in Newark, New Jersey. On 9/11 I was a freshman in biology class; at that moment I realized that America would never be the same. However, never in a million years did I think that I would be serving on a U.S. Navy vessel that was built in the remembrance of the event that took place on 9/11.

In the Navy, my title is Operations Specialist Petty Officer Second Class. My job entails the operation of radar and associated equipment. An OS identifies, maintains, and displays (plot) of the movement of ships, aircraft, missiles, and natural objects detected by our ship's radar. On my off time, I enjoy reading, writing poetry, spending time with family, four-wheeling, and just about anything that moves really fast. I'm also pursuing a degree in nursing; my goal for this year is to submit a package to become a Naval Officer. I am looking forward to getting underway today and beginning our journey back to Norfolk, Virginia.
