McGovern saddened by Travers' death With BC-USObit-Mary Travers, moving nationally SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) Former South Dakota Sen. George McGovern says he is saddened by the death of Mary Travers, one part of the folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary. McGovern says the trio did benefit concerts for him "coast to coast" during his unsuccessful 1972 presidential campaign. Both McGovern and Peter, Paul, and Mary opposed the Vietnam War.
Travers died Wednesday in a Connecticut hospital after a yearslong battle with leukemia. She was 72. McGovern says Travers was one of the great talents of her time, and that he will "miss her sorely." (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. Mary Travers had a voice. Many of us do. But hers was unique. It was powerful, beautiful, authentic, wholesome and radical all at the same time.
People of all ages loved the music of Mary Travers and her pals. Older people liked the harmony, the melody and the fact that they could actually understand the lyrics (I am now of that age where not only can I not understand the lyrics but I am relieved that I can't). Kids loved the music because the melodies were simple, often repeating, beautiful and soothing. And those in between loved the music of Mary Travers because they knew what Puff the Magic Dragon really was about.
