George Strait is a Grammy Award-winning American country music singer. Strait is referred to as the "King of Country," and critics call Strait a living legend. He is known for his unique style of western swing music, bar-room ballads, honky-tonk style, and fresh yet traditional country western music. Strait’s 38 hit albums rank him behind only Elvis Presley and The Beatles.
George Strait was honored as the Academy of Country Music’s Artist of the Decade for the 2000s just moments ago on CBS.The event/concert was called “George Strait: ACM Artist of the Decade All Star Concert” and was taped in Las Vegas in April and featured aritists such as Jamie Foxx, Toby Keith, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn, Jack Ingram, Alan Jackson, Jamey Johnson, Miranda Lambert, Montgomery Gentry, John Rich, LeAnn Rimes, Blake Shelton and Lee Ann Womack.
Strait was born in Poteet, Texas, and grew up in Pearsall, Texas. His father, John Byron Strait, was a junior high school mathematics teacher. Strait got married to his high school sweetheart Norma and was blessed with their fist child Jenifer in 1972. Jenifer was killed in an automobile accident in San Marcos, Texas, in 1986, at the age of 13. The family set up a foundation, The Jenifer Lynn Strait Foundation, which donates money to children’s charities in the San Antonio, Texas area.
