The idea of Cash for Clunkers is going to the kitchen. Although the Cars program has ended (with taxing surprise!), it seems that the government is taking advantage of the success to launch a cash for kitchen clunkers program (also called by many cash for old appliances). Will it work?The idea is to reward people who want to drop their old kitchen appliances and buy new energy-saving ones (the ones that have the Energy Star rating). As an example, in Florida, there is a budget of $17.5 million for this program, but the State hasn’t decided how to use this money.

The Cash for Kitchen Clunkers program is still blurry, and many specialists don’t know to this day how it will be working specifically. One thing is certain, people are buying more Energy Star rating appliances! Unlike the car clunker program, the appliance one is being run individually by each state, which can draw up its own rules. Many states are likely to begin rolling out their programs late this year or early next year.

Google Trends shows that many people are searching for information about the U.S. Department of Energy's program that offers government rebates to people who turn in their old energy-guzzling appliance for a new Energy Star-qualified one. In July, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that nearly $300 million in federal funding was available for the program. That pales in comparison to the $3 billion allocated to Cash for Clunkers, but it's still a nice chunk of change. The money comes from the federal economic stimulus package signed in February.
