Northern Michigan University officials said the situation "under control" after a telephone threat against students, teachers and others, calls for a lockdown in Marquette, Michigan, campus Wednesday morning.

But officials continue to encourage students to stay in the college and visitors to stay away from the campus until further notice. The administration shut the university police after 08:20 Wednesday heard the caller, who had previously threatened to attack NMU.

Cindy Paavola, director of the university's community relations, said campus police took the threat seriously, "said the committee asked the university closed as a precaution.

"The caller threatened to harm the students, faculty, staff and officials," said Paavola. "He has not shown that some people, but there was a global threat, and we take it seriously."

"We do not need to know how serious a threat because they have not caught this person. Instead of apologies, we're safe," said Paavola. State and local law enforcement agencies will help the university police investigation, he added.
