As San Francisco became the first woman District Attorney, and the first African American woman to hold office in California DA Kamala Harris is a pioneer in use. Opposing the death penalty and the more lenient position on illegal immigration, it is also not alien to the discussion. And now it is using the power of the pen to express his "smart on crime" philosophy to the public.
Smart may be the watchword for Harris's campaign, as she has taken heat over not pursuing the death penalty in two high profile murder cases. LAPD Police Chief William J. Bratton has endorsed her candidacy for AG, and defends her anti-death penalty actions saying, "It's much cheaper to sentence them to life in prison and throw away the key." Other recent initiatives by Harris have focused on mortgage fraud and preventing teen dating violence.
